Arusha (Tanzania) (AFP) – At least 10 people have died in several days of clashes over land between Masai nomads and farmers in northern Tanzania, police and media reports said Tuesday.
Police said the clashes broke out on Sunday in the Embroi Murtangosi nature reserve in Manyara province, when armed Masai herdsmen launched an attack on farmers.
“There are ten dead, nine farmers and a herdsman,” local police official Akili Mpwapwa said, adding that calm had been restored.
Local media put the toll at 13 dead and said the situation in the area remained tense.
Both communities claim the use of land in the area and tensions have been high for several years — with deadly clashes occurring twice in the same area in the past.
Land disputes between semi-nomadic herdsmen and sedentary farmers are common across the country, with the farmers often accused of illegally settling in nomadic areas and national parks.
