The style interview with Stephen Chandisareva.
Harare, Zimbabwe. (News Of The South) – The 19 years old 2017 NAMA Nominee Tamy Moyo takes us through her musical journey that she started at a very tender age of 7.
She released an album last year which got nominated on the NAMA andsince then she is been dropping singles topping our local radio charts and right now she is finalising her next single Pano (here).
The News of the South Entertainment reporter Stephen Chandisareva (SC) caught up with Thamsanqa Moyo aka Tamy (TM) who talks about her musical journey.
SC: who is Tamy Moyo?
TM: l am a 19 years old Zimbabwean Afro Pop Fusion singer and song writer. I started music at the age of 7 and with the help of my mother who keeps supporting me, and l never looked back since then. I finished my Advanced level last year.
SC: You became a musician at a tender age? Is it a talent noticed at a tender age or it’s a dream or a passion?
TM: well its little bit of both, a passion and a talent as well because at the age of 7 that where my parents discovered that l have what it takes to become a musician and at the same time l had this passion in me when l was young. As other kids will be playing dolls, I was busy singing all the time.
SC: You released an album recently. How many songs were on the album? Who produced it? How the fans did received it?
TM: yeah I dropped my 18 roller coaster album last year and it carried six tracks which includes Tsoka ndibereke.it was produced by two different producers which includes Daniel Chiweda from JP studios and Alpha. The album received an amazing response actually, it was shocking and amazing.
SC: You were nominated at the 2017 NAMA awards alongside female musical gurus Ammara Brown and Fungisai Mashavave. How does it make you feel considering that you are still new in the game compared to Ammara and Fungisai?
TM: it was very humbling, l didn’t think l was going to be a nominee actually. I was just finishing my A level studies when l have just started professionalising my music. The nomination proved that l have the capacity and even do more musically.
SC: What are the challenges that you have faced as a female artist? We have heard cases of producers and famous artist exchanging sex with recording studio session and collaboration?
TM: To be honest, sexual harassment has never been one of my problems. Yes l understand this industry is male dominated and most female artist that fall prey for sexual harassment don’t work really hard because most of them harassed want to be known and noticed quickly through these famous artist so to me l work twice as much as l can so that l don’t beg or offer myself to be known in music industry in Zimbabwe.
SC: Can you drop school studies and purse music only in Zimbabwe? In other words does music pays off in Zimbabwe?
TM: No, because in Zimbabwe we are not at that level as a nation yet, you cannot be a musician only in Zimbabwe without education certificates. Music is not yet at that level where you can sustain your whole life depending on music alone and l think music is Zim is
more like a hobby. Those that have made it big in music industry like Dr Tuku have been in the game for a long time and you can understand why they have made it.
SC: Recently you released a national anthem Beautiful ndozvandiri. What inspired the song? You featured Takura, Zim hip hop artist and Dobba Don a Zimdancehall artist. What inspired the collaboration of different genres?
TM: As girls l have watched girls falling prey to self-unloved, they hate what they are because someone says you should be light in skin or be slim, body size to be beautiful and it’s not like that, it’s all about the beauty inside of you. Most of my friends fall for that, so
it’s the issue of losing the identity crisis. So basically the song encourages every girls that beauty lies inside not outside. On collaboration, Takura and Dobba Don they are both young like me and l decided as we are both young minds and we can come up with one voice
and agenda to urge teenagers of our age about identity crisis.
SC: Fans are waiting for the Beautiful ndozvandiri video. When is it coming out? Who is going to shot it?
TM: we are looking at two weeks from now, the video is almost done, it was shot in February by Blaqs the one who shot Mukoko video by Tytan and Ammara and it is the editing that is still on.
SC: what are some of the forthcoming productions?
TM: lm still finalising my new single Pano which is being produced at JP studios. The single will be released soon after it’s complete and l`m hoping this new single will take my brand to a whole new another level.
SC: thanks for your time Tamy.
TM: most welcome hey…
