Harare, Zimbabwe – Prominent Zimbabwean businessman Kudakwashe Tagwirei recently featured in an interview broadcast by the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC), where he discussed the newly implemented land tenure system. The ZBC interview was conducted by Monica Chanda on the programme titled Face The Nation.
During the interview, Mr. Tagwirei, who holds significant interests across various sectors of the Zimbabwean economy including energy, mining, transport, construction, and agriculture, elaborated on the transformative aspects of the new land tenure framework. He highlighted how the system aims to move away from the 99-year lease model, emphasizing its potential to enhance access to loans for farmers and promote more responsible and productive land utilization across the nation.
Mr. Tagwirei described the new policy as a “stroke of genius” with the capacity to unlock substantial wealth tied to land ownership. He explained that the changes would empower landowners with greater security and tradability of their land rights, thereby making it easier for them to secure financing from financial institutions for agricultural development and other ventures.
The businessman, who is the founder and chief executive officer of Sakunda Holdings Group, a major petroleum giant, also touched upon the broader implications of the land tenure system for Zimbabwe’s economic growth. He suggested that by providing greater security and facilitating investment in the agricultural sector, the reforms could lead to increased productivity, food security, and overall economic prosperity.
While the specific details of the new land tenure system and the full content of the interview were not immediately available, Mr. Tagwirei’s prominent role in the business landscape and his positive remarks suggest that the changes are significant and are expected to have a considerable impact on land ownership and agricultural practices in Zimbabwe.
This interview comes at a time when land reform and agricultural development remain critical issues in Zimbabwe’s socio-economic landscape. The government has been actively seeking ways to optimize land use and empower farmers to contribute more effectively to the national economy.
It is anticipated that further details about the new land tenure system will be made available to the public, allowing for a comprehensive understanding of its provisions and potential benefits. The insights shared by Mr. Tagwirei on ZBC offer an initial glimpse into the government’s vision and the anticipated positive outcomes of these reforms.
Zimbabweans are not happy about land allocation and land deals happening across the country.
