Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has sacked his vice Premier Qadri Jamil, sighting the latter’s absence from duty without official leave and carrying out unauthorized meetings abroad, the official SANA news agency said.
“Jamil was dismissed because he left his centre of work without prior permission and did not follow up on his duties, additionally he undertook activities outside the nation without coordinating with the government,” said a statement posted in a news flash in Syria TV.
The move follows media reports that deputy prime minister, Mr. Jamil had met with the US point man for Syria Robert Ford on Saturday to discuss proposed Geneva peace talks.
A UN official said Mr. Jamil was discussing the possibility of holding a peace conference for Syria in Geneva, but no breakthroughs were reported to have come out of the talks.
Mr. Jamil, who is a member of a small secular party, was recruited to the government last year in order to break the Baath party monopoly.
