Zimbabwe`s Sungura King Aleck Macheso and the Ocherstra Mberikwazvo Band will perform on Monday night, lighten up the usually entertainment starved town of Chiredzi by staging the first gig since of 2014 in the sleepy sugar growing town.
Ochestra Mberikwazvo band manager William Tsandukwa said the band was no longer visiting the Lowveld town religiously as promoters were not keen to invite the extra-basso to perform.
“We are aware that our fans in Chiredzi missed a lot but it was very unfortunate because we could not stage shows as we used to because we lost lady (promoter) who used to organise shows for us in Chiredzi is now late. However we are back as you can see as we now have a new team which replaced her and we promise our fans nothing other than fireworks,” said Tsandukwa.
Tsandukwa said fans in Chiredzi are likely to enjoy tracks from Baba Sharon’s new album of Macheso to be released in April this year.
“Our fans in Chiredzi might be privileged to listen to a live performance of some of the songs from our new offering which might be on the streets anytime soon. We are however worried with the rate at which piracy is escalating so we will be very cautious,” said Tsandukwa.
The sungura maestro undertook marathon performances before arriving in Chiredzi.
Last Friday he staged a gig in Mutare, Saturday in Chipinge at Dhonzai Night Club and yesterday (Sunday) performed at Checheche Gowrth Point with today’s performs in Chiredzi at Chitsanga Hall.
One sungura fan Tinofirei Wadzai urged musicians not to centralise their performances in the capital at the expense of other small towns.
“The problem with Zimbabwean artists they just perform in Harare and ignore that they have fans that are waiting for them in smaller towns.
We urge them to come and entertain us because we are behind them,” said Wadzai
