Lilongwe, Malawi. (News of The South) – South Africa`s Mamelodi Sundowns ambushed the eight times winners Al Ahly of Egypt with the resounding 5-0 victory on Saturday, in the first leg of their African Champions League quarter-finals.
This is the heaviest defeat suffered by the Egyptian giants in a confederation of African Football (CAF) club competition.
Also on the same day Tanzanian club, Simba SC missed a penalty as they drew 0-0 with five time winners TP Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in Dar es Salam.
Mamelodi Sundows started misbehaving in the 14th minute when Themba Zwane put the host ahead by scoring his sixth goal of his champion’s league campaign.
Wayne Arendse added a second for Sundowns 10 minutes later to which the visiting team did not respond to until half time.
Pitso Mosimane recharged his boys (Sundown’s) during the recess who responded by running riot on the visiting team, when barely 2 minutes after resumption Ricardo Nascimento converted from a penalty spot after an infringement in the danger zone.
The Lucas Moripe stadium was an epic centre of attraction when Gaston Sirino and Phakamani Mahlambi made it a memorable day for all Brazilians when they added ice on the cake with beautiful goals.
This humilitive defeat puts the future of Ahly`s Uruguayan coach Martin Lasarte in doubt even before the two sides meet in the second leg next week.
Lasarte took over from French Patrice Carteron who was sacked when Al Ahly surrendered a 3-1 first leg lead to lose the 2018 final against Esperance of Tunisia.
“We had a very bad match today, and we need to work extra hard in the coming period to fix this humiliation” Lasarte responded to News Of The South after the match.
“There is no time to talk about anything now, and we only have to work and focus on what is ahead, the battle is still on” Lasarte concluded.
Sundown’s were the champions of this continent`s greatest club soccer competition in 2016.
