Zimbabwean author Sue Nyathi has officially entered the global Netflix arena after her acclaimed novel The Polygamist was adapted into a major telenovela set to premiere on June 12.
The 22-episode drama, produced by Stained Glass Productions, marks a significant milestone not only for Nyathi’s literary career but also for Zimbabwean storytelling on the international stage.
The series stars Gugu Gumede as Joyce alongside Sdumo Mtshali, who plays Jonasi Gomora, a powerful self-made CEO whose carefully built empire begins to unravel under the pressure of multiple wives, secret affairs and dangerous betrayals.
Early teasers for the production promise a gripping mix of seduction, ambition, boardroom battles and emotional conflict, setting the stage for what could become one of the most talked-about African dramas on the streaming platform.
For Nyathi, the adaptation represents more than just another television production. It is a historic moment for Zimbabwean literature and African narratives, proving that local stories can resonate with global audiences when given the right platform.
The Netflix adaptation of The Polygamist also signals the growing international appetite for African stories that explore power, relationships, identity and modern society through authentic voices from the continent.
As Zimbabwean creatives continue to gain recognition beyond borders, Nyathi’s breakthrough stands as a proud moment for the country’s literary and entertainment industries, opening doors for more Zimbabwean authors and filmmakers to reach worldwide audiences.
