A 19-year-old Form Six student at St James Zongoro High School in Mutasa has been arrested for allegedly stealing US$3,202 from the school’s administration office to buy a Toyota Lexus. Martin Chitembwe appeared before the Mutare Magistrates’ Court, charged with unlawful entry and theft, but denied the charges.
Chitembwe allegedly deceived the deputy head, Marian Masango, into handing over the office keys by claiming he was sent by Reverend Bezel Matikiti. He then unlocked the main door and the clerk’s office, stealing the money from a drawer. The theft was discovered after police received a tip-off about the purchase of a black Toyota Lexus.
Police seized the vehicle and recovered US$2,400 of the stolen money. Chitembwe’s trial is set for April 26 ¹.
