Life will never be the same to a newlywed couple if the newlywed husband ends up imprisoned for 12 years soon after tying the knot. This was the situation for a Palestinian man, Tamer al- Zaanin – a month soon after getting married to his wife, Hana, he was arrested by the Israel army in 2006 and was caged for 12 years and is expected to be released in 2016.
According to Aljazeera English the man went to prison before having a child with his beautiful wife, Hana. As painful as it was, for the newlywed couple to endure the waiting game for 12 years before they could try for a child – the newlywed couple did not lose hope. They hatched a plan of smuggling out of prison the sperm of Tamer al-Zaanin so that his wife, Hana, would try in-vitro fertilization (IVF).
Hana, the wife Tamer al – Zaanin surfed the internet and read about the successful birth of a child through sperm from a prisoner from Nabulus. During one of the visits to her husband, Hana beckoned up the determination to notify her husband of the plan and the husband gave two thumbs up to the idea. They had to plan how to get the semen out of the prison and how to keep it alive for at least 6 hours before IVF. They finally settled on the idea of using one of his brother’s kids to smuggle the sperm out of prison, during one of the routine visits the box containing the sperm was placed in the jacket of the child known as Rami.
Hana waited patiently for the sperm at the gynecologist’s surgery in Gaza. The doctor processed the sample and the insemination went according to plan – she became pregnant and after nine months she gave birth to a son in good health, weighing 3.1 kgs and they named him Hassan.
As she took her son home, Hana was overwhelmed by visitors and congratulatory messages from people of all walks of life – the sperm smuggled out of prison ended up being a bittersweet for the couple. They now hold Hassan in their loving arms waiting for Tamer al-Zanin from prison in 2016.
Dr Abdel- Kareem Hindawi who oversaw the procedure had this to say:
“I and my colleagues were extremely happy because we succeeded in bringing joy to Zaanin family.”
