Opposition parties in South Africa on Saturday demanded to know how tax payers money had been spent for Mandela`s memorial service following allegations of mismanagement of funds.

According to an Eastern Cape provincial paper, a senior official of the ruling ANC party is said to have embezzled finds released by Buffalo Metropolitan municipality.

About 5.9 million rand (US$532,000) was allegedly paid to a local transport company linked to the ANC official, the money is believed to have been used to print ANC t shirts, other funds are believed to have been transferred to firms which had nothing to do with transportation as the money was meant for transporting mourners to the memorial.

“We want a forensic investigation into this. It’s a scandal,” Jerome Mdyolo, a municipal councillor for the opposition Pan Africanist Congress (PAC), said on Saturday.

A councillor with the opposition Democratic Alliance said even the address that appeared on the transport company’s invoice was apparently false.

“Now imagine you get a slip for 5.9 million rand and the address on the invoice is incorrect and fraudulent. It raises your eyebrows,” councillor Terence Fritz of the opposition Democratic Alliance party.

“So we are asking for an investigation into that,” he said.

A formal request for a probe is expected to be tabled during a routine council meeting on Friday.

South African President Jacob Zuma has already started on his election campaign as South Africa is due to hold general elections and voters are angry about concerns about the high level of corruption in the southern African country.
