South Africa mall collapse claims one and injured many
Authorities say at least one was killed while many were injured after a roof collapsed on a mall that was under construction in Tongaat, South Africa.
The search for survivors was called off and reports say there were no more construction people trapped beneath the half-built shopping mall.
Reports claim that 50 workers might have been trapped in the rubble but rescuer officers working with sniffer dogs recovered one dead body and no other survivors.
“The reasons for the collapse of the building is still unclear and investigations are still under way. The local authorities had obtained a series of court injunctions, the latest November 14, to halt construction”, said the district mayor, James Nxumalo.
The owner of the site has been identified as a well known South African businessman based in Durban.
Commenting on the incident, police spokesperson Mandy Govender said, the entire operation has been stopped and handed over to the Department of Labour.
