“Sorry Won’t Pay the Bills”: Nigerians React to King Charles III’s Banquet for President Tinubu

London, (News Of The South)  – A royal banquet, a historic handshake, and words about “painful marks” left by colonialism—yet Nigerians online are asking the same question: what’s really in it for us?

President Bola Tinubu’s state visit to the UK, hosted by King Charles III, was meant to symbolize friendship and diplomacy. The king acknowledged Nigeria’s colonial past but admitted that “no words” could erase the scars. Social media, however, was less forgiving. Comments poured in warning that Britain, still a major shareholder in Nigeria’s oil, may be signing secret agreements that Nigerians won’t see. “Africa needs to wake up,” one user wrote. “Acknowledgment is nice, but action is what counts.”

The online outcry reflects growing frustration with what many see as a pattern: ceremonies and apologies that fail to address real economic imbalances or resource control. Analysts note that oil, trade, and investment are likely on the agenda—but secrecy and historical power dynamics make Nigerians skeptical.

As state visits go, this one highlights a familiar tension: diplomacy on the surface, questions about sovereignty and transparency underneath. For Nigerians watching closely, the message is clear—words alone won’t cut it.
