Something Nice From London, an international film shot in Harare, Zimbabwe and Norwich, UK is set for a release this summer with a red carpet premiere set for the 27th of August 2016 at the University of Bedfordshire Theatre.
The premiere will be a grand opportunity to showcase to the world the talent Zimbabwean film makers have gained over the years towards telling African stories that are competitive on the international stage.
Zimbabwean diva Cynthia Mare will perform at the event whilst Fungisai Mashavave and Tocky Vibes are expected to grace the event as guests in addition to three hundred other people set to be part of the glitz and glamour of the night.
The grand premiere is being organized by The Decent Arthouse,Latimer Films in collaboration with Zollywood LTD. Appearances for the musicians are being presented by Torro Entertainment and Zim Talent Hunt
Adapted from award winning writer, Petina Gappah who has been described internationally by publishers such as Amazon as “The voice of Zimbabwe”, the film follows the story of the Chikwiro family as tensions rise and they await for the arrival of their dead son Peter (Tonderai Munyebvu) from London. Days pass and still no body. As relatives sing, dance and help themselves to provisions, Mary Chikwiro (Rumbidzai Karize) tries to keep it all together while grieving the loss of her brother, Peter and challenging the family traditions. Meanwhile her cousin in London, Lisa(Lauren Marshal) struggling to find the cash to send Peter home, is forced to make a desperate choice of prostitution in order to raise money to send back the body to Zimbabwe.
It’s a sweeping story which in a fascinating way explores the issues of Immigration, Family Conflict and African Culture. The drama primarily resonates well with all Africans living abroad and in Africa as the characters and storyline are universally crafted towards telling an exceptional touching and nail-biting narrative and goes behind the scenes to showcase what usually happens when someone suddenly dies in the diaspora and has to be taken back home to Africa.
Something Nice From London was made with the support of the British Council as a skills exchange programme that brought together experienced British film makers; Jack Woodcraft and Nick Macq together with super talented Zimbabwean film makers in an effort to produce a Zimbabwean prototype for entertaining yet socially conscious films made on micro budgets, a model that has seen the rise of Nollywood into a sustainable industry. Among the incredibly talented Zimbabwean film makers working on the international film were; Award winning Zimbabwean film director Njagu, Yeukai Ndarimani and Yeukai Ndarimani in the directing department. Seasoned producer Rufaro Kaseke and veteran Leornard Matsa representing Savannah Trust had a production office role in the film while other exceptionally talented practitioners such as Josh Changa (Production Designer),Taurai Kawara (Sound) also took part in this ground breaking British-Zimbabwe skills exchange programme.

Joe Njagu and Rufaro Kaseke , one of the most successful film makers in Zimbabwe impressed the Latimer Films bosses in the selection process by demonstrating not only their creative but also entrepreneurial talents through films such as The Gentlemen that reached a local audience of above 200,000 through distribution by airtime vendors and going on to winning international awards. The duo who are also popular for the box office breaking film, “Lobola” are one of the most influential film makers in modern day Zimbabwean cinema.
All Star Cast
What makes Something Nice From London a truly memorable film is the all-star, well-loved Zimbabwean cast: Munya Chidzonga (The Gentleman), the late Pretty Xaba (Studio 263) ,Michael Kudakwashe (Zambezi News) and other television legends such as Memory Bisusu (Paraffin)and Lovewell Chisango (Jaravaza) and Charles Muzembi(Estate Blues).
