Serena Williams was for the third time honoured as the Associated Press’ 2013 Female Athlete of the Year.
This is the third AP award for Williams following 2002 and 2009. Only two women have been chosen more often as the AP Female Athletes of the Year since the annual awards were first handed out in 1931.
The vote by news organizations was about lopsided as many of Williams’s matches this season. She received 55 of 96 votes while Brittney Griner finished second with 14 votes and on third was swimmer Missy Franklin with 10 votes.
32 year old Serena Williams who grew up in Compton, California produced the finest women’s tennis season in years according to reports by the World Tennis Association (WTA).
“She just continues to be an inspiration to American tennis,” said Gordon Smith, Executive Director for the US Tennis Association.
LeBron James was selected as the organization’s Male Athlete of the Year.
