Scottish African Festival 2015, Date: 24th – 26th July 2015, Venue: David Livingstone Centre, Blantyre, Scotland, Time: 11am – 11pm.
The David Livingstone Centre will host the Scottish African Festival this summer.
According to the festival Director Heather Mudhari, the Festival is aimed at re establishing the connection between Africa and Scotland with objectives to celebrate diversity, promote culture infusion and encourage community integration through arts & culture, theatre & music as well as educational cultural exchange programs.
David Livingstone Centre is set in 20 acres of parkland and gardens overlooking the River Clyde. There are plenty of woodland walks including one along the Clyde Walkway to Bothwell Castle.
The birthplace museum of Livingstone’s life and work is housed in a tenement block which Livingstone and his family shared with 23 other families.
The museum is packed with items relating to Livingstone’s explorations in Africa. These include journals, letters and navigational equipment, as well as dioramas of significant events in his travels. It also gives a fascinating insight into the living and working conditions of 19th-century Scotland.
African Music legends like Zimbabwe`s Dr Thomas Mapfumo (Mukanya), are expected to perform live at the event. The music legend have been on the music scene since the 70s and he has performed at big music concerts and festivals with one of them featuring legends like Bob Marley. He will be performing the traditional music of the Shona tribe, which incorporate and/or reflect the sounds of the drum and mbira, a metal-pronged instrument with spiritual importance.
There will be other live performances by local bands featuring Rise Kagona of Bhundu Boys and Samba Sene of Senegal who have made a mark on the African music scene in Scotland. The festival will also showcase upcoming artists. The organisers pointed out that the fusion of African & Scottish cultures plus established and upcoming; young and old artists is an admirable aspect of the festival. African and Scottish traditional food including barbecue will add flavour to the festival.
Other activities on the program include Family fun day, Sports Day, Fashion Day, a Cultural Parade, Museum tour, Integration Workshops and Guided Woodland Walks.
There are exhibition spaces for hire, to promote local and international business and
designs.
The festival is set to attract hundreds to thousands of patrons from all walks of life
including Athletes, Celebrities, Cultural Groups, Designers, Local & International Ministers
plus Models and Sports stars.
The organisers foresee the event as the most colourful and interesting project for the
history books and also a great opportunity to promote various cultures and networking in
Scotland.
