Mbarara- A pupil of Kanyaryeru Primary School in Nyabushozi in Kiruhura District and her mother who have been in detention since Saturday for delivering a letter to President Museveni without clearance from his security were yesterday released without any charges brought against them.

The officer in-charge of the Criminal Investigations Department in Mbarara District, Mr Ian Kakuru, yesterday said Bridget Atwijukire and her mother, Ms Generous Tumuhimbise, were released from Mbarara Central Police earlier in the day.

“The girl and her mother were looking for survival and looked for any possible way to approach the President. There is nothing much on this matter to cause alarm. They have been released, “said Mr Kakuru.

He said no charges have been preferred against the two. “They were simply let off,” he said.

Mr Kakuru had on Tuesday evening said they were still being held waiting for the advice of the Resident State Attorney.

Asked about the contents of the letter, Mr Kakuru said the letter was given to the President and the contents are known by only his aides, not police.

Rwizi Region Police spokesperson Ibin Senkumbi told the press on Monday that preliminary investigations showed that the girl and her mother were following up on pledges made to them by the President.

Mr Senkumbi said they are said to have been promised land, a house and school fees by the President but they were not forthcoming and they thought someone might have diverted the donation and, therefore, wanted to inform their benefactor.
