A former spy and fierce critic of President Paul kagame was found dead in his $350 a night hotel room in Johannesburg on New Year`s day.

Ex colonel Patrick Karegeya 53 is believed to have been strangled when his body was discovered by hotel staff slumped on his bed.
Karegeya is survived his wife Leah and three children.

Karegeya was a former head of Rwanda`s external intelligence service he eventually fell out of favour and was demoted to army spokesman and was later jailed for “indiscipline” and stripped of his Colonel rank..

The year 2007 saw Karegeya fleeing into exile in South Africa where he began his project against Kagame who he described as a dictator.

Opposition Rwanda National Congress (RNC) party members said Karegeya was killed while attending a meeting at the Michelangelo Towers in Johannesburg’s Sandton district.

“The guy he went to meet was well-known to Patrick. Patrick’s body was found in the room reserved by that gentleman,” said Theogene Rudasingwa another former close aide to Kagame.

Kagame’s supporters are being blamed for the murder.

“He was strangled by agents of Kagame,” said Ntwali .

South African police spokeswoman Mogale said investigators were “following all the possible leads.”

“The motive for the murder is unknown at this stage and most probably they are going to enlist the assistance of the Rwandan embassy with regards to solving this matter,” he added.
