In what once seemed like science fiction, robot taxis — fully autonomous vehicles that transport passengers without a human driver — are now a reality in several American cities. Companies such as Waymo, owned by Alphabet Inc., have begun operating fleets of driverless taxis that can be summoned through a smartphone app, much like traditional ride-hailing services.

The development marks a major milestone in the evolution of urban transport, signalling the arrival of a new era where artificial intelligence, sensors and advanced mapping technology replace the human driver.

Where Robotaxis Are Operating

Robotaxi services are already operating commercially in cities including:

San Francisco

Los Angeles

Phoenix

Austin

Atlanta

Miami

Dallas

Passengers in these cities can request a driverless vehicle using the Waymo One ride-hailing application or, in some areas, through the Uber app. Once booked, a car arrives at the pickup point and the passenger enters a vehicle with no driver in the front seat.

Instead, the vehicle relies on an array of cameras, radar and laser-based sensors to navigate roads safely.

How Passengers Book a Robotaxi

The booking process is similar to ordering a traditional ride-share.

Passengers typically follow these steps:

Open the ride-hailing app such as Waymo One.

Enter the pickup location and destination.

Choose a ride option and confirm the booking.

The robotaxi is dispatched and navigates to the pickup point.

In most cases, passengers book on demand, although some services allow pre-booking shortly before the trip if a vehicle is available in the area.

When the robotaxi arrives, the app instructs the passenger which car to enter. The doors unlock automatically through the app, and a screen inside the vehicle provides trip details.

The Experience Inside the Car

Inside the robotaxi, passengers interact with a digital interface rather than a driver. A touchscreen display allows riders to:

View the route and estimated arrival time

Contact remote support if needed

Control comfort settings

Passengers can also customize the ride environment, including music selection.

Choosing Music

Music options are usually available in two ways:

1. Before the ride

Some ride-hailing apps allow passengers to link their streaming services or select preferred audio settings when booking the trip.

2. Inside the vehicle

A touchscreen interface lets passengers:

Select music stations or playlists

Adjust volume

Change audio preferences during the journey

The system may integrate with services such as Spotify or Apple Music depending on the vehicle and service provider.

Safety and Technology

Robotaxis use a sophisticated combination of technologies including:

Lidar sensors that map surroundings in three dimensions

High-resolution cameras to read traffic signals and detect pedestrians

Artificial intelligence software that interprets road conditions in real time

These systems allow the vehicle to make driving decisions such as stopping, turning and navigating traffic.

Companies operating robotaxi fleets report that autonomous vehicles are designed to reduce human-error accidents, which account for the majority of road crashes worldwide.

A Glimpse of the Future

The expansion of robotaxis signals a major shift in transportation. Industry experts predict that driverless taxis could eventually transform urban mobility by:

Reducing the need for private car ownership

Lowering transportation costs

Improving road safety

Expanding mobility for people unable to drive

While the technology is still limited to designated service areas, the success of early deployments suggests that autonomous ride-hailing may soon become a common feature of city life.

For many passengers stepping into a robotaxi for the first time, the experience can feel surreal — a car gliding through busy streets with no driver at the wheel, guided entirely by software.

Yet for the companies building these systems, the message is clear: the future of transportation has already begun.
