“Reclaiming Zimbabwe’s Moral Compass: Why Urban Governance Must Return to Its Roots”
By Princess Eugene Majuru
Zimbabwe stands at a decisive moment.
For too long, the nation has attempted to govern itself using systems that are incomplete—administratively functional, but culturally disconnected. Nowhere is this failure more visible than in Harare, where modern governance operates without traditional authority.
The result is clear: a society where laws exist, but moral enforcement is weak; where institutions speak, but do not command accountability. This is not by accident. It is the continuation of a colonial framework that deliberately removed traditional leaders from urban spaces. And yet, decades after independence, that structure remains untouched.
This must change.
Zimbabwe cannot build a stable future while ignoring the systems that sustained its past. Traditional leaders are not ceremonial figures—they are custodians of values, discipline, and social order.
But today, they are confined to rural areas, while cities—the very centres shaping national culture—remain without their guidance.
This is a structural flaw.
The solution is not complicated, but it requires political courage:
Recognise traditional authority in urban areas
Integrate chiefs into city governance
Establish systems that enforce cultural accountability
Without this, Zimbabwe will continue to operate with a divided identity—disciplined in rural areas, unregulated in urban ones.
A nation cannot have two moral systems and expect unity.
The call now is not just for reform—but for leadership.
Traditional leaders must unite. Government must act. And citizens must demand a system that reflects who they are—not just administratively, but culturally.
Because without a moral compass, development has no direction.
And Zimbabwe cannot afford to drift any longer.
