0 0RECLAIMING HISTORY: The Truth of King Mbari and the Resilient Harare Kingdom
A crucial historical initiative is underway to dismantle centuries of colonial erasure and restore the true sovereignty of the Mbari Clan Royal Family of Harare. New research confirms that King Mbari was much more than the figurehead of a local tribe; he was the sovereign ruler of a formidable pre-colonial kingdom, and the systematic distortion of his title and lineage was a deliberate act of cultural genocide.
The Colonial Lie of “Paramount Chief”
Historical analysis reveals that the British colonial administration intentionally sought to warp and wipe out the history of the Mbari Clan to facilitate the seizure of their land and the suppression of their governance. This historical obliteration was executed primarily through documentation:
Stripping the Title: In official
colonial documents and public library records, King Mbari is consistently and falsely referred to as merely a “Paramount Chief” or, worse, simplified as a “Zezuru Chief named Mbari.” This downgrading was a legal and political maneuver designed to strip the ruler of his royal authority and national significance, making the subsequent invasion and land expropriation appear justifiable as the subjugation of a minor local leader rather than the dismantling of a vast kingdom.
Erasing the Royal Lineage: This deliberate erasure extended to other key members of the royal family. King Mbari’s brother, Makombe, for instance, is routinely documented with the misspelling Makombi and is often confined to accounts of local battles in the Mazoe area. By misspelling names and limiting geographical scope, the British attempted to conceal the true extent and power of the kingdom, perpetuating the myth that Harare was a territory without a King.
The cumulative effect of these actions was to create a historical vacuum, making it appear as if Harare did not possess a royal heritage.
Strength Encoded in the DNA: The Totem
The enduring power and intrinsic identity of the clan are symbolized by their totem, Shumba Gurundoro. The characteristics associated with the totem reflect the inherent nature of the clan: strong, powerful, and intelligent.
This genetic and cultural resilience explains why the colonial effort to bury the Mbari history has ultimately failed. The clan’s strength is not just physical; it is an intellectual and historical fortitude that runs deep in their DNA.
The Hidden History of Harare Will Not Be Buried
While few authentic accounts of the Mbari Kingdom are currently available in public libraries, it is understood that the bulk of this vital history remains concealed in various locations, locked away in private archives and oral traditions.
The modern effort by the Mbari Clan is a promise: King Mbari’s heritage will not be buried, forgotten, or warped.
By meticulously recovering and documenting the true history, the Mbari Clan is ensuring that King Mbari is formally recognized as the King he was—the sovereign ruler of a powerful pre-colonial kingdom. This historical truth serves as an unbroken link to the present, asserting that the Mbari Clan, bearing the strength of the Humba Gurundoro, continues to be the legitimate Royal Family and Custodians of Harare. Their history is now being secured for future generations, standing as a testament to the fact that truth, like royalty, is eternal.
