Goals from Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema were enough to send Los Blancos one step into the quarter finals of the Uefa Champions League in a 6-1 demolition of Schalke 04 on Wednesday night.

Real Madrid opened scoring early when Bale’s ball was flicked through die Knappen’s defence by Ronaldo for Benzema to pounce and bury in the back of the net, before Bale himself found the back of the net in the 21st minute with a solo effort into the bottom corner.

However, Ronaldo missed plethora of chances in the first half, but finally slammed one shot home as the second half progressed with Benzema scoring from tight angle shortly afterwards.

Sergio Ramos opened Schalke’s defence with 20 minutes to spare and the Welshman delivered the visitors the fifth goal at Veltins Arena, placing the ball into back of the net.

The Ballon d’Or holder capitalised on poor Schalke defence to bang in the sixth goal for Madrid with barely a minute to spare, albeit Klaas jan Huntelaar netted the goal of the night in stoppage time for the Germans.

The victory condemned Jens Kellers men into elimination from Europe at the last 16 stage and eases any pressure on Carlo Ancelotti’s side-who had won one of their last 25 visits to Germany in Uefa ahead of the return leg at the Bernabeu on March 18.
