The western Asian country of Qatar has been hit by a serious flood that has caused water pooling on local roads, resulting in people using boats and schools being closed.

It is reported that the flood has mainly affected the Northern parts of the country and some parts of Doha town that are not equipped to handle sudden influxes of water.

One resident by the name Resident Hamad Al-Thani, who headed north to see the flooding for himself yesterday and today, told the media that the situation was unbearable.

Said Hamad : “I noticed the ponds of rainwater in the desert grew in size after Al-Zubara interchange with local roads flooding.

“When I arrived to Al Shamal, the desert was submerged with water and many of the local roads were flooded.

Al-Shamal industrial area was flooded with rain water and according to the locals; it was the strongest rain they have seen in years and as a result of this schools, in the area were closed for the day.”

The Qatar Meteorology Department however, confirmed to the media that the rainfall has been “more than usual,” but said that there is no cause for concern.

One forecaster also added that there is a chance of thunderstorms today, but the rain is expected to stop by tomorrow morning.

However, efforts to contain the flooding are underway as the Government yesterday contracted a drainage company to keep networks clear.

It is also distributing mobile pumps in areas that do not have rainwater drainage networks and sent out suction tanks to clear floods. In a statement, it said:

The flooding comes barely a week after Qatar`s Metrological Department predicted an all week rains.
