Bulawayo, Zimbabwe – A wave of discontent has swept across Zimbabwean social media platforms following the public acceptance of a luxury vehicle by a prominent Bulawayo-based prophet and preacher, Ian Ndlovu. The founder of Divine Kingdom Baptist Ministries was seen receiving a brand-new 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser 300 Series VXR at a local car dealership, a gift from controversial businessman Wicknell Chivhayo.

The opulent gesture, while celebrated by some, has ignited a fierce debate among Zimbabweans both at home and abroad. Many are questioning the timing and appropriateness of such extravagance, particularly in light of the dire state of the country’s healthcare system.

For years, Zimbabwe’s public hospitals have been grappling with severe shortages of essential drugs, outdated equipment, and a lack of adequate staffing. Reports of patients dying from treatable conditions due to these deficiencies are commonplace, painting a grim picture of a once-envied healthcare system now in critical condition.

The sight of a religious leader accepting such a high-value gift has struck a nerve with many who believe that the funds used could have been better directed towards alleviating the suffering in hospitals. Social media platforms are flooded with comments expressing anger and disappointment.

“Our hospitals are literally death traps, people are asked to bring their own basic supplies, and here we have a prophet being gifted a car that could have saved so many lives,” commented one Twitter user. Another lamented, “Where are our priorities? People are dying in hospitals, and the wealthy are flaunting their riches.”

Wicknell Chivhayo, the businessman behind the gift, is known for his flamboyant displays of wealth and has previously gifted cars and large sums of money to various public figures, including musicians and other religious leaders. While he often portrays these acts as philanthropic, critics argue that the source of his wealth is questionable, with some alleging his involvement in controversial government contracts.

In a social media post accompanying the car presentation, Chivhayo praised Prophet Ndlovu for his role in fostering dialogue and reconciliation in Zimbabwe, stating the gift was a token of appreciation for his service to the “body of Christ.” He also announced a further donation of US$100,000 towards the completion of Ndlovu’s church and US$50,000 to his wife’s charity work.

However, this justification has done little to quell the public outcry. Many feel that while charitable work is commendable, the immediate need for resources in the healthcare sector far outweighs other considerations. The gesture has been interpreted by some as insensitive to the struggles faced by ordinary Zimbabweans who are bearing the brunt of the collapsing healthcare system.

Prophet Ndlovu, who also has a background in academia, having lectured in economics, is yet to directly address the controversy. His sermons often touch on national issues, and he has previously called for prayer for the country’s leadership. This latest development, however, has placed him under intense public scrutiny, with many questioning his judgment in accepting such a lavish gift during a time of national crisis.

The incident has reignited a broader conversation about wealth disparity, the role of religious leaders in society, and the urgent need for government intervention to revitalize Zimbabwe’s healthcare system. As the debate continues to rage online, it serves as a stark reminder of the deep-seated frustrations felt by Zimbabweans who are witnessing the deterioration of essential public services while some individuals enjoy extreme wealth.

The calls for accountability and a shift in priorities towards addressing the healthcare crisis are growing louder, leaving many to wonder if this public outcry will lead to any meaningful change in a country grappling with numerous socio-economic challenges.
