Mnangagwa moves in; suspends Gata, entire Zesa Holdings board

PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa yesterday suspended the entire Zesa Holdings board, including its executive chairperson, Sydney Gata, with immediate effect.

News pertaining to the suspensions (of Gata and entire Zesa board) was carried on Information ministry permanent secretary, Nick Mangwana’s microbloging Twitter handle late on Thursday.

“His Excellency, President Emmerson Mnangagwa has suspended the Zesa executive chairperson, Sydney Gata and the entire Zesa board members with immediate effect,” wrote Mangwana.

The Information permanent secretary added that Mnangagwa had also instructed the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (Zacc) to immediately carry out investigations into the allegations of corruption currently playing out at the government enterprise.

“(Mnangagwa) has also directed Zacc online to immediately undertake thorough investigations into allegations of corruption made,” Mangwana added.

Zesa Holdings, now with a propensity to move from one corruption matter to another, was since last week embroiled in a case in which its long-serving executive chairperson, Gata, was being accused of impropriety.

The publication understands that Gata improperly converted for use by his family members five of Zesa Holdings’ motor vehicles.

Energy minister Fortune Chasi reportedly then moved in to suspend Gata in order to pave the way for investigations into the allegations of impropriety emanating from the five Zesa cars.

But Gata refused to budge, saying only the appointing authority – in this case Mnangagwa – had the wherewithal and stamina to suspend him.

Additional efforts were also made to ensure full implimantation of the ministerial and Zesa board suspension order, with Chasi reportedly hiring a private security company yesterday (Thursday) to seal Gata’s Zesa Megawatt offices in central Harare.
