News of the South HARARE – The Church and Civic Society yesterday cried foul over politicians using people to pursue their endeavours which sometimes result in the death of innocent citizens.
In a joint press statement delivered in Harare yesterday the two social formations said the challenges confronting the nation call for sensitive leadership to commit to the transformation of the people’s lives at all costs.
“The prolonged political cat-fights between the Zanu PF and the MDC Alliance are fast suffocating the masses.
“Selfishness and intransigence by political leaders and their lack of commitment to the improvement of our national fortunes will only further compound our plight as a people,” read part of the statement.
They added that it is critical in the aftermath of the recent electoral period to look beyond political curtains and begin to build mass towards obtaining a national consensus, which is imperative and mandatory for balanced sustainable development.
“To ordinary Zimbabweans, cheap politicking and grandstanding runs very much contrary to our common aspirations.
“It is clear that politicians are never defined as the most important stakeholder group and they should never be allowed to hold us at ransom,” the statement added.
“The lives of the generality of our people have turned into a nightmare in the post electoral period.
“Not only are we unarmed people callously gunned down by the army in the streets, but there is no cash, cholera is wreaking havoc, prices of basic commodities are increasing astronomically, and the political impasse seems to have no ending in sight.
“Lest we forget, the people’s struggle is centred on bread and butter issues, and the fair equitable distribution of national resources for the good of the people and the transformation of their lives,” further read the statement.
The Churches and Civic Society added that Zimbabweans deserve quality living standards and it is unacceptable for the majority of them to wallow in poverty whilst members of the Executive, Judiciary and Legislature live like “Kings and Queens.”
The statement which was released by 25 Church and Civic societal groups made number of demands directed at the leaders for them to improve the lives of ordinary Zimbabweans.
