The Mozambican rebel group Renamo has turned down the invitation by the Mozambican government for peace talks .
Alfonso Dhlakama yesterday recently received an invitation from the Frelimo-led government to travel to Maputo and present his grievances to President Amando Gueduza but rejected the offer as ‘cynical’.
“Defence is an animal instinct. Any animal’s first reaction is to defend itself and survive,” said Fernando Mazanga, Renamo spokesperson.
However the Renamo spokesperson went on to brand the peace talks as ‘a political propaganda campaign without minimal respect of ethics’.
Peace talks between the two parties are expected to end the military skirmishes and many nations have vowed for the two to have dialogue to avoid a civil war which will ruin many developments.
Renamo’s spokesperson said their leader can’t travel to Maputo for fear of being attacked but instead the President should travel to Central Sofala Province a stronghold of Renamo for the talks.
For the Mozambican people and neighbouring countries, the crisis has uncomfortable echoes of a 16 year civil war between Renamo and ruling Frelimo party that claims more than a million lives.
