Harare, Zimbabwe (News of the South)-Some Algerian political parties have been ordered to show the faces of female politicians contesting in elections after putting up campaign posters with blank avatars as part of their conservative practices.

According to a BBC report some parties in the Bordj Bou Province have been ‘showing hijabs surrounding blank spaces alongside photos of male candidates”

However on Tuesday BBC reports that election authorities ordered the parties to stop the practice and to display photos of the female candidates or be removed from the vote.

“This kind of encroachment is dangerous; it is not legal and it opposes all laws and traditions”.

“It is every citizen’s right to know whom he will vote for”, said Hassan Noui from the Independent High Authority for Election Monitoring (HIISE)

An official from the National Front for Social Justice blamed the party’s communication team for what he called a “regrettable posters”.

“The FFS vigorously condemns this practice which is incompatible with the party’s values”, he said.

A female candidate from the FFS said the practice was due to the conservative nature of her province of origin.

“Honestly speaking it is hugely conservative….. it is because of this that my own photo is not used”, she said.

Previously Egypt has also had the same happening with women running for parliamentary seats in the 2011/2012 polls having the image of a flower placed where their faces where supposed to be on the poster.
