Harare, Zimbabwe (News Of The South) – A wave of indignation has swept across Africa in response to recent accusations by the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) against Burkina Faso’s President, Captain Ibrahim Traoré. During a U.S. Senate hearing on April 3, 2025, General Michael Langley, head of AFRICOM, alleged that Traoré has been diverting Burkina Faso’s gold reserves—valued at over $4 billion—for personal protection rather than for the welfare of the nation’s people. The statement has ignited a firestorm of criticism, with many African leaders, political parties, and citizens condemning the U.S. for what they perceive as an imperialist attempt to undermine Burkina Faso’s sovereignty and control over its natural resources.

The Accusation and Immediate Backlash
General Langley’s comments, made during the Senate hearing, accused Traoré of using Burkina Faso’s mineral revenues to sustain his regime, specifically claiming that the country’s gold reserves were being exchanged “to protect the junta regime.” The Burkinabè government swiftly denounced the remarks as “regrettable” and “gravely inaccurate,” asserting that the gold is being utilized for national development projects, such as the planned national gold refinery aimed at increasing revenue for the state. South Africa’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), a prominent leftist political party, issued a scathing statement via its official X account on April 21, 2025, rejecting the U.S. claims as baseless. “We condemn the West’s continued interference in African nations’ affairs and their attempts to control our resources,” the EFF declared. “The EFF supports Captain Traoré’s efforts to reclaim Burkina Faso’s gold for the benefit of its people and to resist neo-colonial pressures.” The party framed the accusation as a strategic move by the West to destabilize Burkina Faso, a nation that has been increasingly assertive in rejecting foreign influence since Traoré’s rise to power following a coup in September 2022.

Voices of Support and Defiance
The EFF’s statement resonated widely, sparking a broader conversation across the continent about neo-colonialism and the right of African nations to self-determination.

noted Traoré’s recent declaration on April 21, 2025, that Burkina Faso would “mine our gold ourselves,” underscoring his focus on sovereignty and economic independence.

Traoré’s Vision: A Break from Neo-Colonialism
Captain Ibrahim Traoré, who at 36 became the world’s youngest national leader after seizing power in 2022, has positioned himself as a staunch advocate for African sovereignty. Inspired by Burkina Faso’s revolutionary icon Thomas Sankara, Traoré has pursued policies aimed at reducing foreign influence, including expelling French military forces in 2023 and forging closer ties with Russia. His administration has also moved to nationalize gold mines and establish a national refinery, actions that align with his stated goal of ensuring that Burkina Faso’s resources benefit its people rather than foreign corporations.

Traoré’s rhetoric has consistently framed Western powers as neo-colonial forces seeking to exploit Africa. In a 2024 interview with Radio Télévision du Burkina, he stated, “We are not enemies with the French people, it is the policy of those who run France which poses a problem in Africa.” His anti-imperialist stance has won him significant support among younger Africans disillusioned with foreign interventions, though it has also drawn criticism for his authoritarian measures and strained relations with traditional partners like France and the U.S.

A Broader Context of Resistance
The AFRICOM accusation comes at a time of heightened tension between African nations and Western powers. Burkina Faso, alongside Mali and Niger, has formed the Alliance of Sahel States, a security pact that reflects a broader shift away from Western alliances like ECOWAS and toward partnerships with Russia and China. Traoré’s government has also been vocal about rejecting Western-style democracy, with the captain stating in April 2025, “It is impossible to name a country that has developed in democracy. Democracy is only the result.” This sentiment resonates with a growing number of Africans who view Western democratic models as ill-suited to the continent’s challenges.

The U.S. accusation also coincides with Burkina Faso’s ongoing struggles with jihadist insurgencies and economic challenges. Despite Traoré’s efforts to assert control over the country’s resources, Burkina Faso remains burdened by an external debt of over $10 billion, and foreign companies—French, Russian, Canadian, British, and Australian—still dominate its mining sector. Critics argue that Traoré’s focus on sovereignty may be undermined by his reliance on Russian support, with some accusing him of replacing one form of foreign influence with another.

Imperialism or Accountability?
The U.S. accusation against Traoré raises complex questions about accountability and imperialism. On one hand, the AFRICOM claim lacks concrete evidence, and the timing—amid Burkina Faso’s push to nationalize its resources—suggests a possible motive to discredit Traoré’s government as it challenges Western economic interests. The U.S. has a history of intervening in African affairs to secure access to resources, and the accusation aligns with a broader pattern of Western criticism of African leaders who pivot away from traditional alliances. The EFF’s condemnation of the U.S. as an imperialist force reflects this perspective, shared by many across the continent who see Traoré as a symbol of resistance against neo-colonialism. On the other hand, Traoré’s rule has not been without controversy. His government has been accused of authoritarian measures, including the arrest of military personnel deemed complicit with terrorists and the dissolution of the civilian government in December 2024. Reports of human rights abuses by the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP), a militia group under Traoré’s administration, have also raised concerns. While Traoré has established mechanisms to monitor VDP conduct, these issues highlight the challenges of balancing security needs with democratic principles—a tension that the U.S. may be exploiting to question his legitimacy.

A Continent United in Defiance
The AFRICOM accusation has galvanized support for Captain Ibrahim Traoré, positioning him as a figurehead in the broader struggle against neo-colonialism. From South Africa to Zimbabwe, the narrative of African sovereignty resonates deeply, as evidenced by the EFF’s vocal support and the symbolic imagery of resistance in Harare. However, the controversy also underscores the precariousness of Traoré’s position, as he navigates internal challenges and external pressures in his quest to redefine Burkina Faso’s future.
As Africa watches closely, the unfolding situation serves as a litmus test for the continent’s ability to assert control over its resources and destiny. For now, Traoré’s defiance—and the support it has inspired—signals a growing rejection of Western interference, with implications that may reverberate far beyond Burkina Faso’s borders.
