Anomalies have been cited in preparations for Guinea elections by the opposition who have declared that elections due for Saturday cannot proceed.
Head of the Union of Republican Forces Sidya Toure said: “We have many corrections to make, both to the ballots and polling stations and in terms of duplications,”
“We are working towards it, but as far as the opposition is concerned, it is impossible for the elections to be held (Tuesday) in these conditions,” said Toure, a former Prime Minister.
An official of the opposition Union of Democratic Forces of Guinea, suggested the legislative polls be postponed to October 6 or 13.
The ruling Rally of the People Party said their party was not in a position to accept any delay.
“Imperfections can be improved up to the morning of the polls,” said the official, Moustapha Naite.
After the talks, the opposition will meet to decide whether to boycott the polls, one official said.
Cellou Dalein Diallo representing the opposition has made allegations that President Alpha Conde’s camp and the electoral commission were planning to rig the vote.
Elections were due to be held within 6 months of Conde`s swearing in in December 2010 but have been postponed several times.
From the time Conde was elected opposing factions have not been able to come to an agreement of how the polls should be organised.
Guinea`s last parliamentary elections were held in June 2002 during the dictatorship of General Lansana Conte.
