In the streets of Harare and the pubs of Bulawayo, a bitter irony is being discussed with increasing fervor. Zimbabwe, a nation sitting on some of the world’s most significant deposits of gold, lithium, and platinum, currently watches its national football team—the “Warriors”—commute to training in hired coaches or borrowed club buses.
As neighboring nations like South Africa, Zambia, and even smaller economies unveil state-of-the-art, custom-branded team buses, the Zimbabwean national pride is taking a visible hit. It isn’t just about a vehicle; it is a glaring symptom of a deeper malaise: the chronic under-prioritization of sports as a pillar of national development.

The math simply does not add up for the average fan. In late 2025, the government has been navigating complex mining royalty debates and projecting a multibillion-dollar mining economy. Yet, the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) and other sporting bodies remain perpetually “broke.”

How can a country that exports millions of carats of diamonds and tons of gold fail to procure a fleet of buses for its national ambassadors? The frustration stems from the fact that the resources exist—they are simply being channeled elsewhere, leaving the nation’s sporting icons to look like “poor cousins” on the continental stage.

”It is a national embarrassment. We see the mineral wealth being hauled out of our borders on heavy trucks, yet our national team can’t even get a bus with a ‘Warriors’ logo on it.” — Anonymous Fan, Harare.

Beyond the Pitch: A Multi-Sport Neglect
The “bus crisis” is not exclusive to football. From the Lady Chevrons in cricket to the Gems in netball and our national hockey teams, the story is the same. These athletes represent the Zimbabwean flag globally, yet they often lack the most basic logistical dignity.
