Mutare, Zimbabwe. (News of The South) – Manicaland’s National Association of Secondary Heads (NASH) Copa Copa Cola Under 15 girls’ soccer winners Nyamauru high school hev vowed to keep the national coveted trophy at the school for a record three successive years.
The Dangamvura based team shocked many during last year’s annual COPA Coca Cola Under 15 boys and girls soccer competitions that were held in Zvishavane when they stormed into the finals from group stages having conceded only one goal in all their matches.
The Admire “Ngangira” coached side which had only 12 players eligible to play in the competition suddenly became a darling to many soccer fans who were watching from the terraces even though it was not playing at its home ground.
This was the second time the team was back at the national finals and when they beat Mpopoma high 3-1, for the first time the team stepped on the podium to receive the national trophy.
In an interview with News of The South at the team’ training sessions at Nyamauru high school, coach Mahachi said they were optimistic to at least stay with the national trophy for a minimum of three years.
He said the experience during last year’s encounter in Zvishavane coupled with the way they have been representing the province since their appearance in 2013 meant they were actually a force to reckon with in this grassroot richest premier soccer league.
“We have been playing in the Copa Coca Cola Under 15 girls competition for six years now. Last year in Zvishavane was our breakthrough as we managed to knock out all the eleven teams that were present having conceded only two goals in the entire tournament. We intend to maintain that spirit this year when the competition begins second term, said Mahachi.
Coach Ngangira and forward Bethel Kondo scored personal milestones after retaining the top individual accolades as they were crowned Coach and Soccer star of the competition respectively.
Ever since their appearance at the NASH Copa Coca Cola Under 15 girls soccer competition six years ago, Nyamauru has been a regular feeder of Copa Coca Cola dream team as well as the Mighty Warriors outfit.
Players like Angeline Mudambanuki, Diana Katandika, Maud Mafuruse, among others have had national call ups although Mafuruse is now a regular.
This year’s NASH COPA Coca Cola will be launched a week after schools re-open next month at a venue yet to be announced. Last year’s edition was launched at Rusununguko high school (Mashonaland East province) who were the boys’ champions of 2017 edition that was held in Bindura.
