VICTORIA FALLS, Zimbabwe. (News Of The South) – POLICE in Victoria Falls have arrested a nurse who allegedly terminated a pregnancy and flushed the foetus down the toilet.
The crime was unearthed when Victoria Falls Municipal plumbers were called to attend to a blockage on the sewer pipes at a house in Mkhosana but discovered there was a foetus in the sewer system.
The woman, Kusatya Jacob Chikulula, of Mkhosana whose husband died last year, was charged with unlawful termination of pregnancy on Friday last week. She is employed at Victoria Falls District Hospital.
She pleaded not guilty to the crime claiming she suddenly had abdominal pains which resulted in her losing blood.
“I didn’t terminate my pregnancy but just saw blood when I went to the toilet as I was having stomach problems,” Chikulula said.
Victoria Falls magistrate Rangarirai Privilege Gakanje remanded her out of custody to a later date when she will appear for trial.
The State led by Takunda Ndovorwi wanted time to call witnesses before trial can start.
A report was made to the police after the discovery of the foetus in the sewer pipe resulting in Chikulula’s arrest.
