Press Statement: Resignation Of Jealousy Mawarire From National People’s Party.

We the National People’s Party would like to put it on record that the unfortunate events leading our former spokesperson to resign were both sad and unfortunate, but that is now water under the bridge we cannot be frozen in time.

NPP is a national institution and is bigger than individuals, indeed members actually come and go! and the difference on Mawarire only being the position he held in the party prior to his resignation.

It is normal and natural that now he has tendered his resignation and terminated his membership, people will speculate as to whether there was more than meets the eye beyond the violence incident he found himself involved in. Well that comes with the territory as well but as a party we are sure that whatever those speculative reasons, we valued his input during his tenure and wish him well in his future endeavors.

It is unfortunate that he has fallen on his sword, but it’s also dignified that he did. However we are very concerned at the video remarks and use of the blanket term terrorists in reference to our party members, without naming and shaming as it implies our whole party is made of terrorists, which all straight thinking Zimbabweans obviously will rightfully view as sour grapes as it would mean he too was part of a terrorist organisation and a key member of the said terrorists.

That, as far fetched as it is, we also accept that as a free agent he has every right to try and salvage his ruined reputation especially as a media person who naturally attracts attention given his recent lofty position in our party.

Mawarire is smart enough to know all this given his success in forcing the 2013 elections through a demand for constitutionalism as the GNU ended. We have no bone to chew with Mawarire as he does damage control to his personal reputation as is his constitutional right. We just pray he does not continue to blanket label us all as terrorists as that is uncalled for and will not cleanse him of any real or alleged offending which his resignation has clearly pre-emptied any due constitutional process which as a matter of course follows such kind of an incident as has precipitated his terminating his membership.

In the days and weeks to come sensational media will latch onto him for scoops on insider dealings and we hope in trying to defend himself and salvage his ruined reputation he will not sink further down the sour grapes route and seek to tarnish the image of the party, former colleagues and its leader, we take his word as given that he believes in Dr Mujuru and with that sincerely wish him a speedy recovery from this set back in his political career, it was both avoidable and unnecessary but then we are all humans with emotions which sometimes we may fail to control. When that happens its time to sit back allow reflection time negotiate the transition curve, accept and take responsibility and then chart the way forward for his life as the young man with a future that he is.

We hope in those reflections he will find time to publicly apologise to his former party colleagues and leader as well as Zimbabweans at large for the embarrassment this unfortunate incident has caused to us all.
