MBABANE, Eswatini / NKANDLA, South Africa – Nomcebo Zuma, the 22-year-old daughter of former South African President Jacob Zuma, has reportedly ended her polygamous marriage to King Mswati III of Eswatini, citing a profound lack of access to her husband. The young woman, who became the monarch’s 16th wife in September 2024, is said to have grown disillusioned after months without seeing the King, a reality that underscores the inherent impracticalities of such a large royal household.

The marriage, formalized during Eswatini’s vibrant Umhlanga Reed Dance ceremony, was initially presented by Eswatini officials as a union “for love” and garnered significant public interest due to the prominence of both families. However, sources close to the situation, as reported by Swaziland News, suggest that Nomcebo’s expectations of royal life may have clashed with the logistical realities of being one of many wives.

It is speculated that as the King’s most recent bride, Nomcebo may have anticipated a period of heightened attention and closeness. Yet, with 15 other wives preceding her, the sheer mathematics of King Mswati III’s domestic arrangements make consistent, individual attention for each consort an almost impossible feat. Even with a carefully structured rotation, the demands of state, tradition, and personal engagements would inevitably limit the King’s time with any single wife. This practical constraint, often overlooked in the romanticized narratives of royal polygamy, is believed to have played a significant role in Nomcebo’s reported departure.

Her exit, referred to as “Kwemuka” in Eswatini custom, has reportedly prompted a high-level royal delegation to travel to Nkandla, KwaZulu-Natal, the Zuma family homestead. Their mission is to negotiate Nomcebo’s return, highlighting the diplomatic and cultural weight placed on this union, which was perceived by some as a strategic bond between Eswatini and South Africa’s influential Zulu community.

King Mswati III, 56, has long faced scrutiny for his lavish lifestyle and his adherence to polygamy, a tradition that often draws criticism when contrasted with the economic struggles faced by many of his subjects. Nomcebo’s reported decision to leave not only brings the personal challenges within the royal family to the forefront but also reignites discussions about the feasibility and impact of such extensive polygamous practices on individual well-being and broader societal perceptions.

As of the current time, neither the Zuma family nor Eswatini’s royal palace has issued an official statement regarding these developments. The situation continues to spark considerable debate, shedding light on the intricate dynamics of royal life, personal expectations, and the enduring complexities of tradition in a modern world.
