Malaei. (News of The South) As one way of ensuring that pupils are kept in school, a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Mpira Mmudzi Mwathu last Friday introduced a new football development program for Under-14 boys and girls in Mzimba District.
An official from the NGO Lulutirani Munthali stressed the need for the growth of the popular sport, football in schools which he said command a huge following.
Munthali further said his organization consider education as a key to a meaningful development of a society hence targeting the primary school pupils who constitute a huge part of the population.
“We have to make an emphasis that only those pupils who are fully participating in school activities should to take part in this competition because our main objective is to maximize pupil participation in academic activities, and at the same time we are developing our beautiful sport at grassroots,” Munthali said.
Commenting on the program the District Education Sports Officer, Sylveria Chalira said the Mzimba like other districts in the country has the potential to produce world class athletes and there was a need to motivate these junior players hence requesting for financial assistance from Mpira Mmudzi Mwathu.
“We want to encourage the pupils, mainly the girl child to compete or participate in sporting activities, you know girl’s football is one of the activities that is gaining mileage in the country, so Mzimba is one of the districts which needed support hence approaching Chimango Munthali of Mpira Mmudzi Mwathu for support, which he has done,” Chalira said.
The Primary School Education Advisor for Ekwendeni zone, Vincent Mhango expressed gratitude with the K300 000.00 worthy football initiative which he said will go a long way in complementing the school curriculum.
Mpira Mmudzi Mwathu was formulated with the primary objective of ensuring that football is regarded as a career and tool for development in the promotion of Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH) and rights among the adolescents.
