Harare – NewsoftheSouth – PURSUANT to yesterday’s national council meeting held by the “MDC 2014 structures”, Douglas Mwonzora has dismissed the same, claiming it cannot be a “national council meeting of the Party.”
Mwonzora, who had issued a statement to cancel yesterday’s meeting at Morgan Tsvangirai House, said the “purported” meeting had “no status”.
“It could not possibly have been a National Council meeting of the Party…The purpose of meetings like these is to disturb processes leading to the Extraordinary Congress,” Mwonzora said, adding that the Supreme Court-born extraordinary congress will be held on 31 July 2020.
Mwonzora explained that yesterday’s meeting could not be the party’s national council given that “about 30 people” were in attendance, whereas a bona fide MDC national council meeting would converge over 200 members.
The MDCT party was instructed to hold an Extraordinary Congress by the Supreme Court, to elect a substantive leader to replace Dr Morgan Tsvangirai who died on 14 February 2018.
The death of the former Prime Minister sparked a fierce succession fight which culminated in Nelson Chamisa and Thokozani Khupe going on to contest the national presidency as candidates of the MDC Alliance and MDCT respectively.
The dispute has now spilt into Parliament with Mwonzora, the 2014 structures secretary-general, recalling four MPs; Prosper Mutseyami, Lillian Timveos, Thabitha Khumalo and Charlton Hwende. The four – already challenging their expulsion in the High Court – say they do not hail from the same party as Mwonzora who recalled them.
Citing a plethora of irregularities about yesterday’s meeting, Mwonzora was adamant that what he has done so far is in line with the party constitution.
