Malawi. (News of The South) – President Peter Mutharika has threatened capital city dwellers with his militant entry into the city.

Mutharika had more than 200 uniform military officers in armoured vehicles on his convoy.
But commenting on the unusual military vehicles on the convoy, his spokesperson Mgeme Kalirani described the situation as normal.

There is nothing strange with those armoured vehicles, if anything the army spokesperson can be a better person to explain about that.
It is them at the Malawi Defenders Force (MDF) who decide how the presidential security should be like, but to us that is normal,” Kalirani said.

Commenting on the development, some political commentators have described the situation as an acceptance, and that all is not well in the country.

A lecturer at the Livingstonia University George Phiri said Mutharika is feeling unsafe for unknown reasons.

“It is very unfortunate that the president can be afraid of his own people, how can one be afraid of the people who voted for him?
“And this is sad because this has only shown that the president can be ruling with such military threats on unarmed civilian citizens,” Phiri said.

This is the first time since Independence in 1964 for a Malawi leader to assemble such a military escort on his convoy.

Meanwhile, the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has called for fresh demonstrations in some districts aimed at forcing the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chaiperson, Jane Ansah to resign.
