Mzuzu, Malawi (News of The South) – The Malawi president Peter Mutharika has provoked the opposition party sympathizers and leaders of the Civil Society Organisation following the outburst of provocative words he uttered during the opening of the Bwanje Irrigation Scheme in Ntcheu District on Tuesday.
Mutharika was commenting to some of the social media mockeries which suggest that Mutharika is afraid of appearing in public following the 21st May election results which the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and the United Transformation Movement (UTM) are challenging in court.
He said he is not afraid of anyone in the country because he already warned the opposition that there is no way they can unseat him from his presidency.
“Some people said I have fled to Mozambique for fear of those in opposition which is not true, I am around and I warned them before the elections that I will crash and destroy them to dust,” the visibly angry Mutharika said.
But in a separate interview one of the CSO leaders Gift Trapenzi called on Malawians to join the nationwide vigils are slated for Thursday and Friday which are aimed at forcing the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson Jane Ansah to resign for what he described as gross mismanagement of the election results.
Trapenzi said Malawians will not relent from these demonstrations which start on Thursday until Ansah resigns from office.
“Let Ansah and Mutharika know that this is not their farm or estate where they can just be doing whatever they want at the expense of the tax payers money, this time around when we start our vigils we won’t relent until Ansah resign from office,” Trapenzi said.
Mutharika has formed a minority government in parliament hence his Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) losing the election of the speaker of the national assembly to the opposition MCP.
Meanwhile the former ruling United Democratic Front (UDF) has also terminated ties with DPP sighting electoral irregularities which it says took place in the country’s Eastern Region.
