Lilongwe, Malawi (News Of The South)- After a number of controversies surrounding the Malawi’s presidential elections the declared winner, Arthur Peter Mutharika of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) had to rise above partisan politics and call for unity and peace among all Malawians.
Mutharika made the appeal on Tuesday afternoon in Blantyre when he was taking oath of office before jam-packed stadium where the judiciary and his Party sympathisers witnessed the occasion.
Mutharika said “now that the elections are over, it is high time the nation should rise above party or tribal lines and develop the country”.
He further commended the citizenry for what he described as a self sponsored general election.
“We have conducted an election with our own resources and that is one of the achievements we should be proud of as a nation” Mutharika said.
Among the high profile members who graced the inauguration ceremony was the former president of the country Bakiri Muluzi who has a corruption case which is dragging in court for almost two decades now.
Recent global financial index provide by a number of world financial organizations shows that Malawi is now the fourth poorest country in the world and yet the country has never been at any civil strife.
And this is Malawi’s sixth democratic election to be held in Malawi which has ushered into office the country’s fifth president.
