Malawi (News of The South) – Due to the rising tension and the impending Friday demonstrations, president Peter Mutharika has cancelled his trip to the northern region where among others he was expected to preside over the Mzuzu University’s 20th graduation ceremony.

A communique dated 5th July 2019 signed by the acting secretary of the college James Kwilimbe has circulated informing all the graduating students and university staff about the changes.

“This is to inform you that there are some new developments which have led to the change in who to preside over the 20th graduation ceremony of the University, the Chancellor who is the head of state will not preside over the ceremony,” reads part of the memo.

Mutharika has since delegated the vice Chancellor of the Mzuni, John Kalenga Saka to preside over the graduation ceremony on his behalf.

Mzuni students dragged the college administration to court for delaying their graduation.

Mutharika has at no any point in time travelled to the northern region of the country since he was declared winner of the controversial presidential election which sparkled violent demonstrations in all the major cities of the country.

Meanwhile the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has cancelled the Tuesday vigils which were organized in order to force the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chaiperson Jane Ansah to resign from her position.
