Lilongwe, Malawi – The Malawi Electoral Commission has finally declared the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate Peter Mutharika as the winner in the Tuesday’s presidential election.

The announcement was made following the ruling by the country’s High Court which pronounced the injunction obtained by the Malawi Congress Party as lacking substantial grounds.

Mutharika has trounced serious contenders Lazarus Chakwera of the Malawi Congress Party and Saulos Chilima of the United Transformation Movement (UTM).

Meanwhile the Livingstonia Synod of the CCAP Church has issued a petition calling on the citizenry to seriously protest the outcome of the election results.

The Synod descried the whole process as fraud and lack credibility. This is the sixth presidential election to be held in Malawi.
