Harare, Zimbabwe. (News of The South ) Afro-folk musician Munyaradzi Nyamarebvu’s last quarter of the year will be filled with various performances locally and abroad.
Amid all of it, the musician’s career will be taking yet another exciting turn as he has revealed that he is one of the few musicians chosen for an American cross-cultural programme called OneBeat happening this October in the United States.
“I am happy to be one of the OneBeat fellows for 2017. As always, where many other countries are involved, I take pride in showcasing one of our greatest exports — the music heritage of Zimbabwe,” Nyamarebvu said.
Nyamarebvu will be in US in September and October where he will first attend workshops with 25 other artists from different countries before touring different cities including Chicago.
“We shall start by doing workshops at an artist residence called Caldera Institute of Arts in Portland,Oregon,” said Nyamarebvu.
“The program basically includes workshops, collaborations and touring/ performances in different States in the US.”
You are given an environment to experiment as much as you want with you music, an environment to discover yourself musically and otherwise as well as how you can come back home and make a difference in your society,” he narrated.
OneBeat is an incubator for music-based social entrepreneurship where innovative musicians from around the world launch collaborative projects designed to make a positive impact on local and global communities.
“My biggest desire is to grow the artiste in me and to have that golden opportunity to also inspire others,” Nyamarebvu said.
“I would also love to carry my audience with me, go through this new journey with them, come back and continue together.”
He said he would be happy if they could follow her on Facebook, Twitter and other such online platforms where he would share her tour experiences.
Nyamarebvu will have a farewell concert at the Zimbabwe Germany Society (ZGS) on 26 August. Dubbed Farewell to America, the concert will have high profile guests.
“I’m expecting to have very important guests in attendance among them German Ambassador Thursten Hutter, US Ambassador Harry K Thomas , ZGS director Taremeredzwa Chirewa Nengare, and Harare Mayor His Worship Bernard Manyenyeni,” said Nyamarebvu.
“This event is to celebrate, acknowledge and to further strengthen future collaborations with some of the organizations whom have so far helped shape my career through various initiatives. These organizations include Goethe Zentrum (Zimbabwe German Society), Pakare Paye Art Centre, US Department of State: Art and Culture and Magitare Live”
Nyamarebvu is a self-taught singer/ songwriter, guitarist, mbira player and mbira innovator whom has also gained performing art experience through interacting different arts platforms, arts centers and other renowned artists.
His music is firmly rooted in African folk tradition with most influences from the rhythms of my home made traditional instrument, the mbira.
