Kyiv, Ukraine (News of The South) – In a series of overnight attacks, Russian forces launched multiple strikes across Ukraine, resulting in casualties and significant damage to civilian infrastructure. While the exact number of strikes is still being assessed, reports indicate that at least ten separate incidents occurred in various regions.

The southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia bore the brunt of the attacks, with local officials reporting at least one fatality and 29 injuries, including a child. High-rise buildings, private residences, non-residential buildings, and educational institutions sustained damage. Rescue operations were conducted, with at least three individuals pulled from the rubble and twelve hospitalized.
In the Black Sea port city of Odesa, a Russian air attack resulted in the death of two people and injured five others. The strikes damaged residential high-rises, private houses, a supermarket, a school, and numerous vehicles, causing fires that emergency services are working to extinguish. The state-owned railway, Ukrzaliznytsia, also reported damage to its tracks, contact network, and freight cars in the Odesa attack.

Kherson, a partially occupied region in southern Ukraine, also witnessed significant casualties. A drone strike on a market in the town of Oleshky reportedly killed at least seven people and wounded over 20. While Moscow-appointed officials in the region claimed civilians were deliberately targeted, Ukraine’s military stated the attack targeted Russian troops, asserting that only military personnel were killed. These claims have not been independently verified.

Additionally, overnight air alerts were issued across much of Ukraine, with the Ukrainian Air Force reporting that Russia launched five ballistic missiles and approximately 170 drones. Air defense systems reportedly intercepted a significant number of these aerial threats, though the exact number that reached their targets remains unclear.
These latest attacks follow a period of intensified Russian aerial activity, including a “massive” drone attack reported by Moscow on the Crimean port city of Sevastopol. Russia has also indicated its intention to create a “security strip” in Ukraine’s Sumy region, bordering Russia’s Kursk region, after claiming to have pushed out Ukrainian troops.

The recent surge in attacks coincides with a landmark minerals deal signed between the United States and Ukraine, granting the US priority access to Ukraine’s critical mineral resources. While Kyiv hailed the agreement as a significant step towards attracting investment, some analysts suggest it could further escalate tensions with Russia.

Amidst the ongoing conflict, US Vice President JD Vance stated that the war in Ukraine is “not going anywhere” and is “not going to end anytime soon,” highlighting the protracted nature of the conflict.

As the situation continues to unfold, Ukrainian authorities are working to assess the full extent of the damage and provide aid to those affected by the latest Russian strikes. The international community continues to monitor the situation closely, with calls for de-escalation and a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
