There is a social work model am going to apply in Mr Mugabe’s crisis situation.
It might not be understood by many of you but never mind as every little helps. It helps him with reflection and Father Mukonori can think about applying it since he is the one mediating. Many in the world applied it and it worked. It is called SIGNS OF SAFETY APPROACH/MODEL.
It is used in crisis situations like Mugabe is in right now. In SIGNS OF SAFETY you answer 3 key questions
1. What is working?
2. What is not working?
3. What can be done to make things work or move to next level?
The above questions can also help those affected by his crisis like the whole country to reflect and focus on solutions. A crisis is solved by a solution and not discussing again and again.
Here is an assessment for Mr Mugabe based on what we know so far
1.What is working?
*He has been offered a good resignation package and stateman status by his party
*He has five retirement homes in and outside Zimbabwe to go live as he chooses
*His wealth is not seized
*His wife, relatives and a Roman Catholic priest are his support system
*Army protected him from a wild mob on 18 November
*SADC and AU do not support coups
*He was allowed to address the world on 19 November and conform he heard people’s grievances and liked the way Army handled situation
*Africans see him as a hero based on his previous racial attacks against the west
*He officiated at graduation ceremony for ZOU
2. What is not working ?
*The people of Zimbabwe want him out for amassing wealth for himself and his family and for oppressive rule that led to loss of lives and livelihoods
*No genuine regional or global support
*Frail and too old to lead day to day
*No security -Army made official announcement that he must step down
*His close allies are now fugitives and dismantled and so his support system is non existent
*Despite demands by masses of people to resign he is adamant -state of address to nation
*He is in denial and still defiant and thinks only axed Vp is an enemy whilst revolt dates back to 1983 Gukurahundi
*No means of communication
*More worried about what will happen to his wealth and not zimbabweans
*Zimbabwe economy collapsed
*No longer centre of power in zanu pf
*Niece zhuwao media statement of defiance angered zimbabweans and escalated situation
*No media support
*Impeachment leaves him more vulnerable
*Pending ICC crimes against humanity
3. What can be done to make things work or move to next level?
*Resignation and dignified exit
*Make peace with zimbabweans and apologise to bereaved families
*Let go Zimbabwe
*Impeachment by parliament but left vulnerable to prosecutions by anyone
*Request military intervention by SADC
*Mobilise own Army within Zimbabwe and fight back
