Maputo, Mozambique – (News of The South) -Mozambique’s main opposition party Renamo, lost its case against the National Electoral Commission (CNE) for massive electoral fraud after the Constitutional Council ruled out today that irregularities in the October 15 general election didn’t substantially impact the outcome.
The council validated the election results, which the main opposition party had unsuccessfully tried to overturn in a legal challenge, declaring President Filipe Nyusi elected for a second term.
Renamo, the rebel group turned opposition party, lost the election to the long-ruling Frelimo party, securing under 22 percent of the vote.
Prior to today’s judgement, Renamo’s national spokesperson, Venancio Mondlane said, “the results of the elections are null and void, and its evidence is well documented.”
During the elections, Mozambican civil societies and international observers flagged numerous alleged attempts to stuff ballot boxes and chase away election monitors, as well as hundreds of thousands of so-called ghost voters on the electoral roll.
Regardless, observers from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) endorsed the elections.
