(News of The South) – Mozambique’s largest opposition party Renamo, yesterday lost its bid to annul last month’s election results after Mozambique’s Constitutional Court threw out its case.
Renamo, the rebel group turned opposition party, lodged an application after it lost the October 15 election to the long ruling Frelimo party.
It accused the government of massive electoral fraud and of using violence and intimidation on voting day.
In its ruling, the Constitutional Court endorsed incumbent President Filipe Nyusi’s election win last month. Official results showed he was re-elected with 73 percent of the vote and his Frelimo party gaining 74 percent of the parliamentary seats.
Renamo leader Ossufo Momade only acquired 22 percent of the national vote. Momade said the annulment could result in violence, “if one wants to save Mozambique, the election must be annulled,” said the Renamo leader.
Last week the European Union cast doubt on the credibility of the ruling party’s victory, saying its observers detected a litany of irregularities and malpractices and called on authorities to clarify them.
