The emergence of a large-scale industrial park in Mount Hampden signals a defining moment in Zimbabwe’s evolving urban and economic landscape. As construction gathers pace—with roads already being paved and land servicing underway—the development is transforming what was once largely open land into a strategic centre of industry and logistics.

Set on 123.6 hectares, the industrial park is being developed in tandem with the Government’s ambitious New City Development Programme. This broader vision seeks to reimagine the outskirts of Harare into a modern, well-planned urban hub capable of attracting investment and supporting long-term growth. Within this framework, the industrial park is not an isolated project, but a critical component designed to anchor economic activity and provide the infrastructure needed for sustained industrial expansion.

Its location is one of its greatest strengths. Situated adjacent to Charles Prince Airport, the park offers seamless connectivity across multiple transport modes. This rare combination of air, road, and rail access positions it as a future logistics powerhouse, capable of handling both domestic distribution and international trade. For manufacturers and industrial operators, such proximity reduces operational costs and improves efficiency—two factors that are essential in an increasingly competitive global market.

The early stages of development have focused on essential infrastructure, particularly the construction of internal road networks and servicing of the land. These foundational works are key to unlocking the park’s full potential, ensuring that incoming investors will have access to reliable utilities and transport systems from the outset. It is this readiness that often determines the success of industrial zones, as businesses seek environments where they can establish operations with minimal delay.

Beyond infrastructure, the project carries broader economic implications. Zimbabwe’s manufacturing and industrial sectors have long required modern, purpose-built spaces to enhance productivity and competitiveness. By creating a dedicated industrial zone, the Mount Hampden development provides an opportunity to consolidate operations, encourage industrial clustering, and stimulate innovation within key sectors.

The park is also expected to generate employment and support the growth of surrounding communities. As industries move in, they bring with them demand for labour, services, and ancillary businesses, contributing to a ripple effect that extends beyond the immediate site. In this way, the development becomes not only an economic asset but also a social one, fostering livelihoods and improving standards of living.

Importantly, the project reflects a shift in how Zimbabwe approaches urban planning and development. Rather than allowing cities to expand organically and often inefficiently, the New City initiative promotes structured growth, where residential, commercial, and industrial zones are deliberately integrated. The industrial park, therefore, plays a balancing role—ensuring that economic activity keeps pace with urban expansion.

As construction continues, the Mount Hampden industrial park stands as a symbol of forward-thinking development. It embodies a strategic effort to align infrastructure with economic ambition, positioning Zimbabwe to better participate in regional and global markets. In the years ahead, its success will likely be measured not only by the businesses it hosts, but by the role it plays in shaping a modern, resilient, and inclusive economy
