Harare, Zimbabwe (News Of The South)- Human rights activists, Sitabile Dewa and Rita Nyampinga have been seized by state agents upon their arrival at the Robert Mugabe International Airport in Harare this afternoon. They have been accused of plotting to remove the constitutionally elected government through unleashing a wave of violent protests.
This brings the total to seven activists who have been arrested since last week in relation to plotting against the Zimbabwean Government. It is alleged that they had attended a workshop at the Maldives, where they were trained in various violent activities to equip them to stir unrest in the country. Upon arrival their laptops and phones were confiscated for retrieval of evidence as they face up to 20 years if found guilty. The pair is also claimed to being linked with the main opposition, MDC Alliance, who have been accused of trying to topple the government through acts of terror.
In response to these allegations, the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) released a statement this afternoon saying,
“The MDC strongly condemns the crackdown on civil society by the military government. We condemn the arrests and detention of the human rights activists. Free Sitabile Dewa and Rita Nyampinga”
In their defence, the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) has deployed its lawyers to attend to the detained activists.
