Harare, Zimbabwe (News of the South)-The coming of age gay flick Moonlight upended the tables last night and took home the Best Picture award beating expected winner La La Land at the Academy Awards ceremony.
The nostalgic musical La La Land had come to the awards ceremony with a record-tying 14 nominations and was expected to waltz home with a huge chunk.
It initially seemed so after a mix-up resulted in announcers Warren Beaty and Faye Dunaway stating that La La Land was the winner after he had been given the wrong envelope though the mistake was quickly rectified midway through speeches by the La La Land team.
After Maheshala Ali won best supporting actor for his role as a gangster who takes under his wing a fatherless boy, winning the Best Picture award really capped it for Moonlight which also took home the Best Adapted Screenplay.
La La Land however had a lot to be consoled about after taking home a total of six awards including Best Director for Damien Chazelle and Best Actress for Emma Stone.
It also won Best Cinematography, Best Score, Best Original Song for City of Stars, Best Production Design and Best Original Screenplay.
Its lead actor Casey Affleck was also voted the Best Actor for his role in Manchester By The Sea.
Chazelle also got the distinction of being the youngest filmmaker to win a best director Oscar at the age of 32.
Other winners on the night include Viola Davis who took home the Best supporting actress for her role in Fences directed and also starring Denzel Washington who failed to win on the night.
Davis however made history becoming the first black woman to win an Oscar, an Emmy and a Tony for acting.
