A man who impersonated Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa and lied about being a member of the CIO duping an unsuspecting man of US$3000 was sentenced to 30 months in prison by a Harare magistrate.

Tarisai Rugare Chiriga (24) was arrested together with his accomplice, Tinashe Muwandi, in December last year on charges of impersonating the Vice President and using that to dupe a Harare man.

The court was told that Chiriga would call the complainant purporting to be VP Mnangagwa and demand more money from him.

Allegations are that in November Chiriga and Muwandi introduced themselves as members of the Central Intelligence Organisation and from then began regularly demanding money from him.

The court heard that Chiriga then received US$3000 from the complainant. He was arrested on December 14 when he had come to receive more money, US$60 from the complainant.

Documents originated by him claiming that he was a member of the CIO were recovered by the police.

Harare magistrate Mr Elijah Makomo gave Chiriga an initial 40 months prison sentence before slashing 10 months for 5 years.

Chiriga will however return to court again as he has other pending matters of the same nature.
